The First World War was a defining event in Canada’s history.  It was by any measure a traumatic experience that left few areas of national life untouched. Overseas, particularly in France and Flanders, but also in other theatres throughout the world, Canadians on the sea, on the ground and in the air contributed substantially to the war effort but paid dearly for their involvement.  In the end, the war claimed the lives of some 61,000 Canadian men and women and left more than 172,000 wounded in body and mind.

The CDA Institute wishes to remember and honour the Canadian sacrifice on the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice that ended the Great War. During the Vimy Award Gala to be held Nov 2, 2018 at the Canadian War Museum, 1 Vimy Place, Ottawa, each table will be named after a significant battle in which Canadians participated, whether mostly on their own or in support of their British allies.  Whether sitting at the “Ypres” table, the “Somme” table or the “Mons” table, the connection between the nation’s military past and today will be undeniable.

At the Award Gala the CDA Institute will present this year’s Vimy Award.  The Vimy Award was initiated in 1991 by the CDA Institute to recognize annually, one Canadian who has made a significant and outstanding contribution to the security and defence of our nation and the preservation of our democratic values. The nomination process for this award is now open, and any Canadian may nominate one Canadian citizen for the award.
